EU Urges Rapid Cloud Uptake

A high ranking European official, Neelie Kroes, has called on state members to show willing in a new partnership.
It has been designed to support the rapid deployment of cloud technologies for intercontinental public authorities and businesses.
The European Commission's vice-president insists that cloud computing brings a raft of benefits to host countries, and hopes that the European Cloud Partnership will iron out the creases that are currently associated with the technology.
"Cloud Computing will change our economy," Ms Kroes declared, when speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
"It can bring significant productivity benefits to all, right through to the smallest companies, and also to individuals. It promises scalable, secure services for greater efficiency, greater flexibility, and lower cost," she added, according to Computer Weekly.
Ms Kroes, who is responsible for the European Commission's Digital Agenda, then announced that she was plunging 10 million Euros (£8.35m) into the cloud partnership. Its main aim will be to find out the factors that are currently preventing, or stalling, the mass uptake of cloud computing for European businesses and government.
Therefore the commission is to address issues like standards, certification, data protection, interoperability, lock-in, and legal matters.
John Higgins, director general of consumer advocacy group Digital Europe, welcomed the news in a statement emailed to PC Advisor. He explained that the European Commission's lead could speed up cloud adoption across a wide range of sectors.
"Widespread adoption in the public sector will drive awareness, trust and confidence in cloud services which in turn will be good for the European cloud services market," he said.
